Menarcheal Age of Middle School Girls in Rural Area

Abstract
|
|
|
We have investigated 979 middle school girls in the Ok Chun & Young Dong County who have began menstruation, through an inquiring as to date of menarche, menstrual cycle and motivation of getting knowledge about menarche before it.
The results were as follows.
1. The average menarcheal age of girls was 14.03±0.95 years and varied from 10.5 years to 17.3 years.
2. According to menarche occurrence by the present age, revealed 11.70±1.01 years at 12 years old, 12.95±0.56 years at 13 years old, 13.70±0.75 years at 14 years old, 14.04±0.91 years at 15 years old, 14. 76±1.05 years at 16 years old and 15.03±1.48 years; at 17 years old. And so, the tendency is that menarche occurred earlier as time advances.
3. Questions about the existence or non-existence of menarche by the present age, 12. 2% have had menarche among 12 years old girls, 63.4% at 14 years old and 93. 9% at 16 years old, and
so none that have not had it over 17 years old.
4. Monthly & seasonal frequency of menarche occurrence showed that Summer peak in August,
in the largest number, December, the second, January, the third an so on.
5. Cyclic change after menarche showed that irregular menstrual cyclic pattern was 367 cases, in most number, and 28 days and 30 days pattern were 115 cases and 99 cases respectively.
6. As to motivation of getting knowledge about menarche before it, 42.6% got to know through
teacher and 25.8% did through mother.
